Leading People Well When You Sign the Paycheques
Every person on your payroll is someone's child, spouse, or parent. You do not just hold a role over them — you hold influence over the atmosphere they live in forty hours a week.
Leadership · By Daniel Ziedins · · 7 minute read
There is a moment every business owner crosses without ceremony: the day someone else's rent depends on your decisions. It arrives quietly, and most of us are unprepared for how heavy it is.
Scripture speaks directly to that weight. Employers are told to lead without threatening, remembering they answer to a Master themselves. Authority in the Kingdom is never a possession — it is a stewardship, and stewards give account.
And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favouritism with him.
Ephesians 6:9
Pay quickly and pay fairly
Scripture is remarkably blunt about wages. Do not hold back what is owed overnight. Late payment is not a cash-flow technique for a believer — it is a justice issue, and God hears about it.
Correct without crushing
Most managers either avoid hard conversations until they explode, or deliver them in a way that humiliates. Neither is Christlike. Be specific about the behaviour, generous about the person, and clear about what changes. Then let it be finished — do not make someone carry a correction forever.
Hire for character, train for skill
- Skill gaps close with time and teaching. Character gaps rarely close on your timeline.
- Watch how a candidate speaks about their last employer — you are hearing how they will one day speak about you.
- Ask what they do when nobody checks. The answer tells you more than any résumé line.
- Be honest in the interview about the hard parts of the job. People forgive difficulty; they do not forgive being misled.
Your culture is the sermon your team actually hears
You can put a verse on the wall and still build a fearful, gossiping workplace. People do not learn your values from your statements — they learn them from what you tolerate, reward, and repeat. If you want a Christ-honouring culture, the first person who has to submit to it is you.
